King Arthurs Quart-Live at Allen Jr. High 1966 SIN O21

KING ARTHUR'S QUART CD -LIVE AT ALLEN JR. HIGH 1966

As most Fuzztones fans know, frontman Rudi Protrudi started playing professionally in 1966. This is a super rare recording of his very first band, King Arthur's Quart, playing live at a Pennsylvania Junior High school dance. From Rudi's liner notes:
"Who woulda thought that, after 33 years, people might actually be interested in hearing recordings of my first band? Hell, we were about as amateur as you could get, and never even got close to entering a studio and recording a record! I'd started playin' guitar in '65, inspired by the British Invasion that prompted loads of kids to pick up instruments and head for the garage. By '66, I had formed a band with a buncha outcasts from my school. We knew a few chords, and since most of the hit tunes at the time only had a few chords, we figured we could tackle the hit parade. What you have here is a super rare recording from a cheap-ass portable reel-to-reel, of my first band, running through a coupla crowd pleasers at a sock hop at Allen Jr. High in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. The girls stood on one side of the gym(school dances were always held in the gym!) and the boys would stand on the other. If a boy actually summoned up enough nerve to ask a girl to dance, a teacher, acting as the appointed dance monitor, would walk around with a ruler, to make sure that the couples danced at least 6 inches apart! We played the standards that every band played at the time: "Gloria," "Wipe Out," "Hey Joe," "Steppin' Stone," "Louie Louie," etc. Once in a while we'd throw in an original...something practically unheard of in my neck of the woods! Protest songs were very big at the time, so we came up with our own "anti-Vietnam War" opus, "They're Gonna Take You Away." Fuzztones fans may recognize it as the precursor to "It CAme In The Mail." Same with "She's Got A..," later to become "Brand New Man." King Arthur's Quart only lasted a few months. Soul music had become very big in Camp Hill (even tho' there wasn't a soul bro' within miles!), and our rhythm section went off to form the Soul-Town Society. I went on to form Rigor Mortis, a garage-psych punk band that covered stuff like Fugs and Velvet Underground, as well as dish out originals like "Penis Between Us," and "Crotch Rot."After several line-up changes, Rigor Mortis split up in '71."
Low-fi stereo with hilariously inept musicianship. The singer (not Rudi - he didn't begin singing until '76) sounds like he's on glue! 10 PRIMITIVE PULSE-POUNDERS: They're Gonna Take You Away/She's Got A...?Midnight Hour/ Louie Louie/ House of the Risin' Son/Hey Joe/ Wipe Out/Psychotic Reaction/Gloria - added bonus track: Bandit (Rigor Mortis-live in 1967!)
